Courses Offered

ANTH 373: Archaeology Field Studies 

This course focuses on developing archaeological excavation and laboratory analysis skills.  During summer 2019, the course will be held in Blue Creek, Belize in conjunction with the Maya Research Program.  Students will be expected to learn the basics of Maya cultural history through participation in field activities and assigned readings.   Students will participate in the excavation of Maya elite residential structures and a funerary temple at Tz'unun.  Evening lectures will expose students to a broad array of archaeological topics.  A bioarchaeology concentration is available in which students will learn the basics of human osteological analysis and excavate human burials.  

Please note, the courses are not required to participate in the program.

ART 372: Scientific Illustration 

This special offering of Scientific Illustration in Belize will provide a broad introduction along with the opportunity to apply sound illustration principles in the field. Belize is an ideal setting to study and research unique natural forms and archeological objects/spaces while creating scientifically accurate and educational illustrations. Students will learn research requirements, visual data management and several commonly-used media and techniques to communicate visually with accuracy and aesthetic awareness. For one assignment, students will capitalize on the copious Maya artifacts to specifically gain experience with artifact illustration, in addition to natural science illustration.

*Tuition and fees will be billed separately for course credit at Summer 2019 rates.
